SDAT 2022 Homeowners and Tenants Tax Credit applications available online
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) today announced that applications for the 2022 Homeowners and Renters Tax Credit programs, which have saved Marylanders more than $64.5 million in FY21 is available online. The quickest and easiest way to determine eligibility for these credits and submit a claim is to access the ministry’s innovative online tax credit claim system, which enhances SDAT’s ability to continue processing all tax credit claims accurately and quickly. The Property Tax Credit for Homeowners program provides tax relief to eligible homeowners by setting a limit on the amount of property taxes owed based on their income. Applications received and approved by May 1 will be included in the initial July tax bill. If a resident has already paid their property taxes and applies for them before October 1, any tax credit the homeowner may be entitled to will be refunded by their county finance office. In FY21, 42,272 eligible homeowners received an average of $1,451 in tax relief.
The Tenant Property Tax Credit Program also provides tax relief to eligible tenants who pay a high monthly rent relative to their total income. The majority of recipients of this credit are Marylanders age 60 or older, but the program is also available to 100% disabled and renters under age 60 with at least one dependent child. This credit is issued in the form of a direct check payment of up to $1,000 per year. In FY21, 7,525 eligible tenants received an average of $446 in tax relief.
All Marylanders who received a homeowner’s or renter’s tax credit in 2021 will have a free application for 2022 mailed to their home address. Homeowners may also be eligible to receive a homestead tax credit to limit increases in the taxable assessment of their principal residence. To determine their eligibility, homeowners can complete a one-time online application, which can be completed year-round.
Many counties and municipalities also offer additional residential tax credits. If a resident is eligible to receive the state homeowners credit, they may automatically receive the additional local homeowners credits for which they are eligible.
